In mijn praktijk De Ladder komen nogal wat kinderen met rekenproblemen. Bij sommige kinderen ontstaan de echte rekenproblemen pas in groep 5, als er verwacht wordt dat de basis van het rekenen tot 20 stevig is. Als dat niet zo is, of als het bijbehorende getalbegrip nog onvoldoende is ontwikkeld, wordt er verder gebouwd op een wankele basis. En dat gaat meestal fout.
Eerst werken aan een stevige basis
In groep 3 ligt de focus op het automatiseren van de plus- en minsommen, eerst tot 10 en daarna tot 20.
Sommige kinderen lukt het niet om deze sommen te onthouden. Zij blijven de sommen tellend op hun vingers uitrekenen, soms zelf tot in groep 8!
Maar dit gaat ten koste van het begrip van de leerstof die daarna komt! Alleen op een stevige basis kun je verder bouwen (of een Ladder neerzetten..) Het is net als bij het leren autorijden: als je nog moet nadenken met welke voet je moet remmen, wordt het lastig om te leren schakelen.
Zelfs bij de bovenbouwers die nog op hun vingers tellen, is het dus nog zinnig om terug te gaan naar de basis. Eerst de splitsingen tot 10, met de sommen die daarbij horen.
Hoe leert jouw kind automatiseren?
Voor sommige kinderen werkt het om te oefenen met gedichtjes, waarbij ze zelf een melodie verzinnen of een tekening maken. Bijvoorbeeld:
Splitsing van 7
Hé, wacht eens even!
Kijk eens naar die 1 en die 6,
samen bij de les.
Maar die 5 en de 2
Die letten niet op, ojé,
De 3 en 4 doen wel goed mee,
Nou de leren het wel, die twee!
Anderen, de meer visuele leerders, hebben baat bij het steeds weer opnieuw invullen van de splitsingen in een tabel, of op gelamineerde driehoekjes die steeds uit te vegen zijn.

Voor een kind dat leert door te handelen, zijn de Eierdooskaartjes een oplossing. Alle splitsingen kunnen gevonden worden door te kijken welke 2 kaartjes precies op bijvoorbeeld het kaartje van 9 passen. Het is zelfcontrolerend materiaal dat ook prima te gebruiken is om te automatiseren. Meer informatie.
Splitsen op een hinkelbaan is ook leuk voor degenen die van bewegen houden (en inmiddels is bewezen dat bewegen en leren goed samen gaan).

Als het op al deze manieren niet lukt, is het tijd voor de JAMARA-rekencoaching.
